What began as a dream 2 years ago blossomed into a possibility
last year and in September of this year will become a reality.
Turning 40 in '07 presented me with a wonderful opportunity
to plan a once-in-a-lifetime trip, to do something I might not
have thought myself capable of, to accomplish what will be one
of the most exciting and certainly the most challenging thing
I've ever done.

If you're interested in finding out more about my journey feel
free to click around.  Also, visit my blog where I'll be sharing
what's happening in my training as I physically prepare for
my trip, my trials and errors of choosing what gear and
clothing to take along and the struggles and challenges of how
to spend 3 1/2 weeks in Africa while staying within my 33 lb
weight limit.  I mispoke earlier.  THAT will certainly be the
most challenging thing I've ever done!

Kilimanjaro is topped by three dormant volcanic summits, Kibo (19,340 feet), Mawenzi,
(16,896 feet), and Shira (13,140 feet). Its fabled glaciers, some of the very few on the African
continent, are rapidly disappearing.

Location: Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania
Elevation: 19,340 feet
First ascent: Hans Meyer, Germany & Ludwig Purtscheller, Austria, 1889
About the name: The derivation of "Kilimanjaro" is unknown, but it might come from two
Swahili words, "Kilima" and  "Njaro," which together mean "Shining Mountain."

Jim submitted this sweet article and photo
to THE VAIL DAILY in honor of our 8th
anniversary.  He is absolutely my biggest
supporter and I couldn't be more grateful to
have found such a wonderful husband.

I can't imagine anything better than sharing the Kilimanjaro
experience with a good friend.  I met Abby in Colorado through
the hiking club.  I was instantly drawn to her warm, caring nature
and her positive outlook on life.  We have hiked many miles
together and this summer plan to try a little backpacking.  Though
Abby insists she is "not a camper" she will have to spend 8
nights in a tent on Kili so better to practice a bit first.  Abby's
main concern:  that her tiara might fall off and roll away during
the night.  Don't worry Abby, I have a plan that includes
superglue and a stapler to ensure that won't happen.
Here I am "practicing" in the
new tent my son-in-law Chad
gave me (Thanks Chad!) and
sleeping in my new Marmot
Helium EQ 15 Degree Sleeping
Bag that Jim gave me for
Mother's Day.  I've decided not
to bring my new, cozy sleeping
bag along to Kili since I'm so
limited in weight.  Instead I'll use
the one Kiliwarriors provides in
the rental package.  I hope it's
as comfy as mine!
